What a missing code does NOT mean

The Banca d'Italia lists the banks, payment institutions and e-money institutions it registers, not the allocation of the ABI code space. Poste Italiane (07601), the Banca d'Italia itself (01000) and the Italian branches of EU payment institutions issue real Italian IBANs outside these registers. So a code listed here names its holder, and a code absent from them proves nothing: the API answers authoritative: false for Italy, and an absence is never a reason to stop a payment.

IBAN structure with this code

An Italian IBAN is IT, two check digits, one CIN letter, the five-digit ABI code, a five-digit CAB (the branch), then the twelve-character account number. The ABI code is what the Banca d'Italia registers can name a holder for; the account part is known only to the bank.

IT12 F082 6901 6000 0000 0123 456

Synthetic example: the account part is a placeholder, this IBAN belongs to nobody. It shows where the code sits inside the IBAN.

The IBANforge API checks an IBAN and names the bank behind it, with its BIC when one is known, reading national registers such as the one on this page. Two ways to start without paying:

Keyless trial

Send an IBAN to POST /v1/iban/validate with no key at all, up to 25 times a week, on that route only. With this page’s example IBAN:

curl -X POST https://api.ibanforge.com/v1/iban/validate \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"iban":"IT12F0826901600000000123456"}'

Free key

200 requests a month on every endpoint once you add an e-mail address and confirm the code sent to it. With no address and no card, it starts at 25 requests a month, straight away.
